When to Seek an Evaluation

Families reach out for an evaluation when something doesn’t feel quite right, such as when their child is struggling with learning, attention, social skills, or emotional well-being, and it’s not clear why. A comprehensive evaluation can help determine the potential source of these challenges.

Our goal is not simply to provide a diagnosis or give a label, but to help individuals and families feel understood and supported, with thoughtful insight and practical recommendations that can make a meaningful difference over time.

You might consider an evaluation if your child is:

  • Struggling academically despite putting in the effort

  • Having difficulty with attention or executive functioning (e.g., planning)

  • Experiencing behavioral outbursts for unclear reasons

  • Showing signs of autism or social communication challenges

  • Recovering from a concussion or medical condition that affects thinking

  • Experiencing anxiety, mood changes, or behavioral concerns

  • In need of diagnostic clarification for school or healthcare planning

Comprehensive Evaluations

Our comprehensive evaluations are designed to provide a deeper understanding of how your child is functioning across key areas of development. We can assess strengths and vulnerabilities in several different domains:

  • Cognitive abilities such as attention, executive functioning, intellectual skills, visual abilities, language, memory, and fine motor skills.

  • Academic skills such as reading, writing, and mathematics.

  • Emotional functioning including self-esteem, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns.

  • Social communication such as nonverbal communication (e.g., eye contact), back-and-forth conversation, and other social skills.

These evaluations can assist in identifying conditions such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), intellectual disability, executive functioning challenges, learning disorders (including dyslexia, dysgraphia, and dyscalculia), anxiety, depression, and more significant mental health concerns.

Our process is individualized. We integrate multiple sources of information including developmental history, clinical interviews (with parents, teachers, and providers), standardized testing, and questionnaires to ensure that results are both accurate and meaningful. We also take time to understand each individual’s unique experiences, allowing us to provide context that goes beyond test scores alone.

Most importantly, our evaluations are designed to be practical and actionable. We translate findings into clear, personalized recommendations that can support success at home, in school, and in everyday life. Whether you are seeking answers, guidance, or a clearer path forward, our goal is to help you move ahead with confidence.

Our Approach

Where insight and action meet.

We believe meaningful change begins with understanding and continues through action. An evaluation provides insight into how someone learns, thinks, and feels, helping families and providers intervene and provide supports.

The name Confluence reflects this philosophy. A confluence is the point where two or more rivers meet, joining together to form a stronger, unified flow. Our name is inspired by the meeting of the Cains River and the Southwest Miramichi River—two iconic rivers in New Brunswick. Where these rivers come together, their waters continue forward with greater strength, depth, and direction.

In the same way, an evaluation brings together multiple sources of information to create a clear, actionable understanding of an individual.

We understand that seeking an evaluation can feel overwhelming. Our goal is to make the process supportive, collaborative, and easy to understand from start to finish.

At Confluence Psychological Services, we believe that insight is not the end point—it is the starting point for meaningful action.

The Process

Initial Consultation

Once we formally launch services, the first step is calling our office for a phone consultation to discuss if an evaluation would be helpful for your child. If you decide to proceed, we send you background history and consent forms to complete and sign electronically.

Parent Interview

We meet virtually for approximately 1 hour to discuss concerns regarding your child’s thinking skills, emotions, social functioning, and behavior. We also gather more background information to help guide how we will structure testing.

Testing Session

Your child completes paper-and-pencil and computerized tasks to measure his or her thinking skills and other aspects of functioning. This occurs at our downtown Fredericton office and takes between 3-6 hours depending on the type of evaluation. Breaks are provided.

Feedback Session

We meet again for 1-2 hours a few weeks later in-person or over Zoom to discuss results, diagnoses, clinical impressions, and recommendations on how to best support your child in different settings. You will then receive a full report outlining everything, which can be helpful for schools and providers.
